The Issue:
- Building resilience - the ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, and the many sources of stress in life can help children and teachers alike learn to manage stress and feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and self-doubt in a range of different situations.
- Teaching staff under pressure, busy schedules, paperwork and therefore may not always plan their work or teach optimally.
- Children also benefit from developing emotional resilience to cope with stresses and strain of daily lives, ranging from bullying, exams and even problems or abuse at home.
Our Solution:
- As part of the school inset day training programme, we provided a one-day training session for all teachers within the school
- We also worked with a small group of key teachers to develop additional expertise in developing resilience coaching skills to offer support for both teachers and pupils
- We helped the school to devise a resilience support programme to help pupils approaching key examinations.
The Outcome:
- The programme proved beneficial for teachers who reported improved stress management, increased job satisfaction and an improved ability to cope with workloads
- Teachers were also better able to model resilient behaviour in classrooms, which improved teaching performance and also provided examples for pupils on dealing with stresses.
- Increased resilience skills and also reduced the sense of stress amongst teaching staff and improved job satisfaction and morale.
- Pupils also able to benefit from resilience training, enabling them to become more rounded, resilient individuals, better able to cope with the stresses of daily life.
- This was particularly helpful for pupils facing key examinations, who learned strategies for managing anxiety and maximise performance.
