Cognitive- behavioural therapy (CBT) has been shown by a numerous research trials to be the most effective form of talking treatment for a wide range of common emotional and physical health problems including:
Depression and low self-esteem
Anxiety disorders, including panic attacks, generalised anxiety and worry
Performance anxiety, social phobia and shyness
Anger issues
Relationship problems
Eating disorders
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Insomnia
General stress and life problems
Illnesses with both physical and psychological elements such as chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, epilepsy and heart disease
CBT has been shown to be as effective as antidepressants for overcoming depression and is more effective at preventing relapse because individuals learn lifelong skills that they are able to apply when new problems arise in the future.
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) now recommend that everyone should be offered CBT as the first-line treatment for depression and anxiety problems and as an alternative to immediate antidepressant treatment.
Accessibility via the NHS to skilled CBT services is extremely limited over much of the UK,. Since many people are unwilling to take antidepressants, the result is massive under-treatment of a number very serious conditions.
The UK government has recognised the value of CBT and is in the process of investing more than £70 million over a 3-year period, through the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) initiative Whilst there can be no doubt this programme will improve access to CBT via the NHS, it is also likely to result in an increased awareness and demand for evidence-based psychological treatments such as CBT. Given the numbers involved, this may be difficult to meet adequately with the duration of current traditional methods.
Resilient Minds provides an effective method of translating these evidence -based principles of 10 Minute CBT into the work environment. This enables resilience skills to be developed before problems spiral out of control, and could prevent many of these more serious problems from developing.
